MIS-EN-SCENE: STRANGER THINGS ANALYSIS
Lighting: There are parts of the lighting that shows low key lighting, flickering light, red lights, white lights, these has connotations of creepy and mysterious because of the low key lighting, the flickering light has connotations to horror, the red lights has connotations of hell, while white lights has connotations to heaven.
Setting: There are parts of the setting were the character is in a laboratory, building, lift, house, street, middle of nowhere, these has connotations of the unknown being being everywhere, the laboratory has connotations of science fiction, when the guy was on the lift he was so scared, the house, where the kids were playing has a connotations that they are not aware of what's happening on other places, it shows that they are calm, while Will was on the street the unknown being was planning on targeting more peoples as it is coming for the houses.
Props: The props used in this trailer are bicycles, bags, hats, which all of these has connotations of like they are on a mission or something, or they're on a adventure, or it could also has connotations of rebellion, as they are all independent.
Costume: The costume of these kids have casual clothes, which has connotations that they're calm, and is also from the old days fashion.
Actor: The guy from the laboratory looks so scared, and is determined to get into the lift on time, but wasn't able to, this has connotations that the unknown being follows a sound, as shown is the trailer the guy in the laboratory didn't make a single sound, it could also have a connotation that he's alone. Will, acted like he's mature already, seeing how he locked the doors, and instantly knew that there was something following him, he also called for peoples in the house, but when he knew that no one was home he decided to go straight to the storage room, and loaded the gun with bullets.
Makeup and hair: The characters in this trailer didn't had makeups, which links to 1800's, the kid, Will, had makeup when he was being chased by the monster, there was a dirt makeup on his face and clothes.
Extension:
Within this trailer it shows that the genre will be science fiction, since the establishing shot is on a laboratory. As for the characters I think it will be them who the audience will focus on, because when adventure films are being produced most of them are around 20-30's years old, whereas in the stranger things film they are kids, it'll be more bright and fun to watch.
The hair and clothing because it is explained well where they got the ideas from.
LR:
- The costume of each individual shows old fashion which shows that these was way back 1980's. The way they style their clothes shows us that they followed the old generation or that these was an old generation as they look like they still don't know what types of clothes or what kinds of colors looks good when combined together.
- The author made the kids look more like an adult for them to look more independent and to look like they know what they are doing.
- The author made Mike look more of a scrappy person, the way the author makes his costume shows us that out of all the characters he's the more old fashioned and the way his costume looks not dirty but it looks like a scratch shows us that he's vintage.
- The author wants the setting to look more realistic, by doing so they made the setting's color neutral to feel the California vibes.
- The author chose a sound/ music that is already famous enough to gain attention, these has connotations that the author wants us to to feel excited or to make the audience feel safe while watching the scene because the song Running up that hill have calm beats.
