COURSEWORK PRELIMINARY EXERCISE

 1) Write a 100 word statement of intent explaining what you are going to make for your preliminary exercise.

Statement of intent: 100 words explaining what you plan to make.
I plan to make a 30-40 second advert about a teen who's hobby is dancing and always drinks a healthy drink to maintain fitness and achieve their goals while ensuring that they are taking care of themselves properly. The beginning of the advert will be a video of the character taking the healthy drink out of the refrigerator and then drinking it before going out to the park and then practising a dance. My character will be in a sports clothes that will match the mood of the idea that she is dancing. In addition, to match the idea of how the drink can give her energy and to make her focus.

2) Write a script for your preliminary exercise on your blog. This needs to include stage directions AND dialogue. To see how a TV drama script is presented, and to look at professional examples, check out the BBC Writers' Room and click on Script Library. These will not be advert scripts but the layout will be the same.
The character should come from a room after changing to sports clothes and gets her stuff ready for her dance practice. The character then walked towards the refrigerator and opened it. The character leaned down and look for something, she then found the the Dr Witt drink. The character reached down for the drink and took a sip before closing the refrigerator door. The character will then collect her things and head out. The character will then start to walk and find a place for where she will practice to dance. Once she found the place, she will put down her stuffs and start dancing, after dancing, she will drink again while saying the slogan "Stay healthy, so you won't need a Dr." and head back while jogging to show that she still had energy after doing a lot of practice.

3) Casting: Who will be in your preliminary exercise advert?
The character that I have chosen for my preliminary exercise advert is my sister.

4) Plan your locations: Where you will film your preliminary exercise? (You can film off-site if you wish to do this for homework - this is what we would strongly recommend). Important note: You CANNOT take any students out of any other lessons OR disturb any other lessons in the school. If you wish to film in-school then you will need to film with Mr Ray supervising or after school with a Media teacher present.
I plan to film my preliminary exercise at home then the character will then go to the park.

5) Write your shot list: every shot you plan to film. This needs to be far MORE shots than you will actually use in the final edited version - plan extra angles, close-ups, long shots and more. You can find an example shot list here. This is for a narrative film but the layout will be the same.

  • Low angle
  • High angle
  • CCTv shot view
  • Long shot
  • Pack shot
